AUGMENTED REALITY
Augmented Reality(AR) refers to the combination of real and virtual worlds(computer-generated). A real image is captured on video, while the image is "augmented" with layers of digital information. It is an interactive experience of a real-world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information. It can also be defined as a system that fulfills three basic features: a combination of real and virtual worlds, real-time interaction, and accurate 3D registration of virtual and real objects.
AR / VR: the confusion -
AR is related to two two largely synonymous terms: mixed reality and computer-mediated reality.
Some people confuse AR with VR(Virtual Reality) which is different. VR is a complete immersive experience that shuts out the real world. Augmented Reality superimposes a computer generated imagery(CGI) video onto a camera captured video, giving the impression that the CGI objects appear to have a fixed location in the real world.
A brief History -
The first Augmented Reality technology was developed in 1968 at Harvard when computer scientist Ivan Sutherland(named as "father of graphics") created an AR head-mounted display system. The first AR application appeared in 2008. It was developed for advertising purpose by Germany agencies in Munich. They designed a printed magazine ad of a model BWM Mini, which, when held in front of a computer's camera, also appeared on the screen. A user was able to control the car on the screen and move it around to view different sides. This application was one of the first marketing campaigns that allowed interaction with a digital model in real time.
AR in Current time-
Nowadays people are taking use of AR is different sectors for different purpose:
- Travel and tourism
- Medical Care
- E-commerce
- Shops and Marketplaces
- Entertainment Purpose
- E-Learning
- Classroom Education
- Public Safety
- GPS
- Manufacturing items
- Gaming
- Training an simulation
- Field Service, and many more
Augmented Reality concept in movies -
Realistic vs Fiction:
We remember a scene from the movie Spider-man: Far from Home of the Marvel Comic Universe,
Scene: Pop-Up display above bus passengers' head
When Spider-man put on 'Edi' AR glass for the first time and looked at his teacher and classmates sitting in front of him on the bus, he saw information pop-up windows above each person's head. It is quite questionable thing, "Is it achievable with technologies today?"
Another scene from the same movie:
Scene: Spider-man outfit model display on the jet.
When Spider Man got into Tony’s weapon design/craft system on his private plane, he asked the system to show ‘everything it has on Spider Man’. The system showed holograms of 5 different Spider Man uniforms. Asking again "Is that possible today?"
There are hundreds of movies which show the visual effects to make it more interesting that attract audience. These movies uses the AR and VR technologies to create realistic scenes.
Some of the movies are:
Iron Man, Avatar, Wall-e, Predator, Terminator, etc...
And who can forget this-
The Future of Augmented Reality-
Augmented Reality is predicted to be a bigger sector than virtual reality but what does the future hold for the technology and how does marketers make use of it?
AR is quickly becoming one of the most interesting technology in digital space. It will take time before AR technology can reach its full potential.
I think everyone would basically agree that we do not have the science or technology today to build the AR glasses that we want. We may in five years, or seven years, or something like that. But we’re not likely to be able to deliver the experience that we want right now. "—Mark Zuckerberg
In 2018 google had introduced us with an interesting update in google maps. What's that?
